The 12th Annual Kiwanis Club of Palm Springs (KCOPS) “Tony Lopes” Youth Baseball Clinic once again brought together young athletes, coaches, and community leaders for a high-energy day focused on baseball fundamentals, teamwork, and life lessons that extend far beyond the field.
Each year, the clinic continues to grow as local youth step onto the field to sharpen their skills and deepen their understanding of the game. Through hands-on instruction covering hitting, pitching, fielding, base running, and team strategy, participants receive individualized and group coaching in a supportive, engaging environment. For some players, it’s their first introduction to the sport. For others, it’s an opportunity to refine their skills and build confidence.
Adding to the excitement, former Los Angeles Dodgers players Rudy Law and Derrel Thomas joined local coaches, volunteers, and the Rancho Mirage High School baseball team to mentor the next generation of athletes. Their presence reinforces the clinic’s mission: teaching young players that baseball is not just about winning games—it’s about discipline, accountability, respect, and perseverance.

“Sports teach lessons that last a lifetime,” said Rudy Law. “Not every kid will grow up to be a professional athlete, but the values they learn—dedication, teamwork, responsibility, and resilience—will help them succeed in whatever path they choose. It’s always a pleasure to come back to the Coachella Valley and work with these kids.”
The clinic is made possible through the strong support of community partners. This year’s sponsors included Grand Slam Sponsors Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and Cindy Pieper-State Farm Insurance Agent, Home Run Sponsor Jessup Motors, and Triple Sponsors Contour Dermatology and Walter Clark Legal Group.
Their support not only makes the clinic possible, but also helps fund the Kiwanis Club of Palm Springs scholarship program, which awards $10,000 annually to local high school students pursuing higher education, whether at community colleges or four-year universities.
Founded in 1951, the Kiwanis Club of Palm Springs has established a legacy of serving children across the Coachella Valley through mentorship, community programs, and hands-on service—reflecting Kiwanis International’s mission of improving the world one child and one community at a time.
That impact continues in 2026 as the Club marks its 75th anniversary. To celebrate the milestone, Kiwanis Club of Palm Springs is awarding mini-grants to local youth-focused organizations, expanding its reach and support for the next generation.
For many of the young athletes at the clinic, the lessons gained on the field—teamwork, accountability, perseverance, and leadership—will extend well beyond the game, shaping their paths in school, careers, and life.
